The
University and Community
Oklahoma State University was founded in 1890. As a major
comprehensive university, OSU's main campus in Stillwater has
approximately 20,000 students enrolled in eight separate colleges,
including about 4,500 in the Graduate College. The University offers
doctorate degrees in 46 areas, master's degrees in 65, and bachelor's
degrees in 85 major fields.
OSU is a land-grant institution and enjoys extensive land holdings;
the main campus covers 415 acres, and another 20,000 acres are nearby in
the attractive Lake Carl Blackwell area. Approximately 200 buildings are
on our unusually beautiful campus, with buildings constructed in a
uniform Georgian architectural style. The University is continually
expanding these excellent facilities, and recent additions are the $38
million Noble Research Center for Agriculture and Renewable Natural
Resources, and the $35 million Advanced Technology Research Center. Both
buildings are located adjacent to the Chemical Engineering facilities.
Also adjacent to Chemical Engineering is the Edmon Low Library, which
contains more than 5.3 million books, documents and microforms. The
library subscribes to 16,000 journals and magazines. The science and
engineering collection occupies one-and-one-half floors and has an
excellent selection of chemical engineering-related materials.
The University offers a wide variety of cultural and entertainment
opportunities. Internationally known artists perform regularly at the
Seretean Center for the Performing Arts and at the annual Orange Peel,
and exhibitions by prominent artists are held in the Bartlett Art
Center. In addition, OSU has one of the top intercollegiate sports
programs in the nation. Our athletes have won 40 NCAA team championships
and 136 individual championships. A multitude of other sports activities
are available through an extensive intramural sports program. OSU's
Student Union is one of the best in the nation, offering restaurants, a
hotel, a post office, a variety of shops, and meeting and recreational
facilities.
OSU is located in Stillwater, an attractive and
friendly community of approximately 40,000 people
located in north central Oklahoma. Stillwater was
recently ranked as one of the safest cities in the
nation, and it enjoys the high quality of life typical
of University settings. At the same time, the major
cities of Tulsa and Oklahoma City are each only about an
hour's drive away.
Oklahoma's weather is characterized by warm summers, moderate
winters, with beautiful spring and fall seasons. Bicyclists, golfers,
tennis players and others can pursue their sports year round. Two large
lakes, just fifteen minutes from Stillwater, provide a wide range of
outdoor activities, including boating, camping, fishing and water
skiing.
