R. Russell Rhinehart
Professor and Amoco Chair

BACKGROUND:

Russ joined us in 1997 as Bartlett Chair and School Head and returned to a faculty position in 2008. For 13 years between his MS and Ph.D., he worked in the chemical industry, and for 12 years prior to joining OSU, he had been a professor at Texas Tech University.

Russ is co-author of the text "Applied Engineering Statistics," Editor-in-Chief of "ISA Transactions," Treasurer for the American Automatic Control Council, and a member of several advisory boards. He is a fellow of ISA-The International Society for Automation.

TEACHING INTERESTS:

Process control, optimization, modeling and simulation, kinetics, transport, and unit operations lab.

RESEARCH INTERESTS:

Russ’s research interests are process and decision automation, modeling and simulation, and data analysis. With the availability of high performance computers, the field of process control has now evolved to mean the "automaton of process management." His team is developing methods for nonlinear control, process optimization, computer perception, learning systems, autonomous control and statistically based triggers; and they are complementing theoretical analysis with experimental demonstration. Through industrial partnerships, many of these techniques have been transferred into commercial practice.
